FAQs
1. What do Good Neighbors stand for?
We support democracy and socialism (in the sense of a democratized economy, not dictatorial state control) and strive for a broad, non-dogmatic and experimental approach to social equality, liberation, and responsibility toward one another and the ecosystems that support all life.
We reject all systems of elite domination - capitalist or otherwise - and oppose all forms of social oppression like hetero-patriarchy, white supremacy, settler-colonialism and empire. This of course means we are completely anti-fascist.
2. Are you liberals? Or communists? Or anarchists? Or socialists? Or...
Yes and no!
We are a democratic movement committed to liberation, democracy, equality, and all that is necessary to achieve them.
This is a big-tent movement for pro-democracy anti-capitalists. This is a movement for people who reject fascism, racism, sexism, one-party rule, rigid ideological straightjackets, "democratic centralism" (aka one-party rule), and related tendencies.
We are not a movement for ideologues. We are a movement for practical-minded people who want to build real communities and serious democratic revolutionary power.
If you want to build directly-democratic grassroots community power, or democratize the existing Democratic Party, or build workers councils and revolutionary labor unions, or any other variant that isn't authoritarian, pro-capitalist, exploitative or bigoted, this is a place for you.
3. What do you mean by democracy?
Democracy simply means rule by the people: Social and political processes that give all people affected by them maximum power to shape them.
We are open to diverse forms and new experiments. We don't claim direct democracy, representative democracy, consensus, or any other form is superior in all cases but instead encourage people to consider which forms in which situations really give everyday people the greatest voice while reducing opportunities for elite capture, manipulation and control.
We reject the exclusive "Western"/European claim to democracy, recognizing that the dominant institutions of the European so-called democratic tradition have always embraced slavery, patriarchy, colonialism and aristocracy. No democracy has ever been or will ever be perfect, but we broaden our inspiration to the many more authentically democratic forms practiced by peoples around the world throughout human history, and by those peoples within the walls of 'Western' so-called democratic societies who have fought for a more authentic vision of freedom and equality.
4. What do you mean by socialism?
We mean workplaces and economic systems run by the people, not corporate dictators (even corporate dictators calling themselves "Comrade").
What does this look like?
Publicly-owned systems like libraries or community radio, but for everything
Public housing, but governed by the people
Worker-owned cooperatives and consumer cooperatives
Networks of democratic communes
Workplaces run by democratic unions or workers' councils
Etc. etc. etc.
There are tons of solutions - and not all of them are the best fit for every problem. Get creative, practical, start building, and start where you think it makes the most sense.
5. Are there real-world examples of what the Good Neighbors fight for?
Yes. While there are no perfect societies, we are deeply inspired by those communities which have fought to achieve meaningful democratic governance, ecological sustainability, social equality, and the capacity to effectively defend and sustain these systems in established territories over many years.
The most holistic currently existing examples include the territories of Zapatista autonomous government in Chiapas, Mexico, the Autonomous Administration of North & East Syria (AANES), the ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala province, India, and the diverse parties for democracy and socialism in national government in Nepal.
We also take inspiration from the whole diverse universe of historical liberation struggles, from the Black Panther Party for Liberation to revolutionary territories of Anarchist Catalonia in the 1930s, from the Free Ukraine established through the efforts of anarchists lead by Nestor Makhno to the revolutionary government of Thomas Sankara in the 1980s, to countless indigenous systems throughout history and around the world.
To a more limited degree we take inspiration from the Nordic systems of social democracy, despite rejecting the xenophobic and capitalist tendencies in those countries, and even from some programs in authoritarian socialist societies that are are beneficial for the people, despite rejecting dictatorial one-party rule.
6. Do you just want my money?
I mean, are you offering...?
Just kidding. While we encourage every local branch to pool money by establishing a commitment to monthly dues, to cover the costs of operating and expanding, we don't currently have any kind of larger-scale body that needs or collects money.
I know, it's hard to believe, in this capitalist hellscape of marketing scams and corrupt "non-profit" organizations, but we don't want your money. We want you to get serious about overthrowing the system and freeing us all.
There is no one in charge of this movement - the goal is to build democratic collectives that coordinate as we see fit. All we offer here is a model and a framework, a way to 'plug in' and coordinate - if you wish it.
You don't need us, we don't have all the answers. But if you want a network of pro-democracy collectives, we're building one here. Whatever happens, don't give up the fight.
